The single use plastic bag fee is now a reality in Fairfax County. On September 14, the Board of Supervisors approved a 5-cent fee on single-use plastic bags from grocery stores, convenience stores, and drug stores. The fee will go into effect in January. Read the plastic bag ordinance here.

Many of you have worked for years with state legislators trying to get the General Assembly to pass a bill allowing municipalities to write an ordinance on single-use plastic bags. When the state did pass legislation in 2020, many began working with your district supervisors seeking their support for a fee in Fairfax County.

To all the people who have written, called, visited in person and via zoom, and provided testimony thank you.

Without your efforts we would not have seen the single use plastic bag fee ordinance passed. Thank you for all you do.
