President Biden promised to be a climate president – yet under his watch, the U.S. continues to be the biggest producer of oil and gas in the world. In the first few years of his term, he approved more lease sales for new oil and gas drilling on federal lands and waters than Trump. And his administration has approved new oil and gas projects, like the Willow oil drilling project in Alaska and multiple oil and gas export terminals in the Gulf.
Starting June 9, 2023, and leading up to September, we’re mobilizing to turn up the heat and make Biden take real climate action. 350 Chicago is organizing with national and international partners to make it clear that siding with Big Oil is a political liability for Biden – and we, the people who got him elected, demand better.
Our kick-off action “Death To Fossil Fuels” is on June 9, 2023, at 11 am at the Kluczynski Federal Building @230 S. Dearborn. We will rally demanding President Biden put an end to the fossil fuel era and declare a climate emergency, from there we will have a New Orleans-style funeral procession for the “death of fossil fuels” with local brass band Windy City Ramblers leading the way as we march to Chase Tower to tell Chase Bank to stop financing fossil fuel infrastructure, and to the Aon Center to say NO to the proposed Peoples Gas rate hike!
We also will have speakers demanding that President Biden shut down the Line 5 oil and gas pipeline currently running under the Straits of Mackinac, talk about the devastation on the South Shore from years of fossil fuel pollution, and much more tba.
Our fight for climate justice is connected, and together we have the power to make Biden use his powers to speed the end of the fossil fuel era and build an energy future that works for all.
