Divestment Ordinance Day of Action on March 16th

On February 23rd 2022, the Chicago City Council introduced an ordinance to have the City Treasurer’s Office fully divest the city from fossil fuel assets!
The Fossil Fuel Divestment Ordinance (02022-672)is scheduled for a vote on Monday, March 21st in the Joint Finance and Environment committee.
If the ordinance is passed out of committee, the full city council could vote on passage during the Chicago City Council meeting on March 23rd.

Background:
The ordinance requires the City to immediately freeze any new investments in the top fossil fuel companies* and divest from direct ownership of any commingled funds that include fossil fuel public equities and corporate bonds within 5 years.
The ordinance was introduced into the city council by Mayor Lori Lightfoot. 49th Ward Aldermen Maria Hadden, 32nd Ward Alderman Scott Waguespack, 12th Ward Alderman George A. Cardenas and 1st Ward Alderman Daniel La Spata are the sponsors of the ordinance. Please contact your alder person and ask them to vote for the Divestment Ordinance.
