People’s Climate March: A Global Call For Action. Not Words!.
Indonesia – In East Asia, a large rally will take place at the heart of the world’s largest coal exporter – Indonesia, to send a strong message to the newly elected President to create a development partway that works for the people and climate.
It will take place on September 21, on Bundaran HI during the Car Free Day. In the weeks leading up to September 21, solidarity actions will also be organized in the Philippines, China, Vietnam, Taiwan, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, and Malaysia.
Activities will include online engagement, social media training, media briefing, exposure trips, dialogues, consultations. This massive coordination will build momentum, and engage and mobilize local communities in these countries for the People’s Climate Mobilisation, and at the same time send their demand for survival to the world leaders at the New York Summit.
The NY march aims to bring hundreds of thousands of people to the streets of New York City to call on world leaders to commit to bold climate action as they arrive to attend a historic Climate Summit hosted by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon. The summit is one of the last chances for world leaders to come together and spark international progress before it becomes too late to avoid catastrophic climate impacts. World leaders will be greeted with the largest mobilization on climate change, with the main demand for Action, Not Words.
“People from across the planet will be making sure that leaders gathered in New York know the demand for action comes from every corner,” said Bill McKibben, co-founder of 350.org, a global campaign on climate change. “This is the first truly global problem, and it has spawned the first truly global movement!”
Alongside the global mobilisations a delegation of globally diverse grassroots leaders will be in attendance in New York to ensure voices from movements and campaigns around the world are heard while also giving emphasis to ongoing struggles which will serve to launch a series of mobilisations beyond September.
The People’s Climate Mobilisation and the Climate Summit in New York mark the beginning of a busy 18 months of crucial international negotiations. Climate negotiators will head to Lima, Peru, in December 2014 to make progress towards a global climate deal. Then, in September 2015 world leaders will meet back in New York to adopt the Sustainable Development Goals, the global post-2015 development agenda. Three months later, the world will gather in Paris to try and sign a new international climate treaty.
Today 350.org and its allies launched the People’s Climate Mobilisation web platform as part of a global call to action to coincide with the People’s Climate March taking place in New York City this September just before a United Nations Climate Summit. The march in New York will take place on the 21st of September, and the global mobilisation will span the full weekend of September 19-21.
The web platform launched today will serve as a focal point for mobilisations being planned globally and as an open platform where anyone, anywhere will be able to register a local event and will also find online support tools in multiple languages.
