There’s big news! It’s been a crushing week for the fossil fuel industry, thanks to years of relentless people-powered campaigning by the climate movement.
In the space of just a few days (some on the same day, even!), these good news stories rolled in:
- A Dutch court ruled that Shell must reduce its net carbon dioxide emissions 45% by 2030 (with 2019 as a baseline). This is historic, great news. This decision sends a strong message to fossil fuel companies, banks and pension funds all over the world that greenwash and lies will not prevent them from being held accountable for the climate crisis.
- In the US, the oil giants were shaken: Chevron shareholders voted against the oil company’s board, to force the company to cut its emissions, and two climate activists were elected to ExxonMobil’s board.
- Over in Australia, the federal court delivered a landmark ruling that the federal environment minister has a duty of care to Australia’s youth not to cause them harm from climate change. That means approving more climate-destroying fossil fuel projects could be in breach of this duty!
- And in case you missed it, on May 18, the International Energy Agency joined the choir and said what campaigners and activists have been saying for years: we have to get off fossil fuels NOW and leapfrog development across the globe towards a renewable energy powered future.
When we push long enough, the fossil fuel industry’s pillars of support start to crumble.
Early this month, we’ve also seen how the Asian Development Bank (ADB) concedes that its old energy policy is outdated and that it will stop financing any new coal-fired power projects.
Let’s keep up the momentum. We have a lot to celebrate and a lot of work that remains ahead. It’s time to push harder than ever before. People power can tip the scales.
