Representatives Debbie Dingell (MI-12) and Dave Trott (MI-11) introduced the Preserve Our Lakes and Keep our Environment Safe (LAKES) Act, which would require a year-long study to determine the safety of Enbridge’s 62-year-old Line 5 pipeline. Enbridge has a terrible safety record, with many spills, including the significant 2010 Kalamazoo spill, which was the worst inland spill in U.S. history. Researchers at the University of Michigan have called the pipeline’s location the “worst possible place for an oil spill in the United States”, and their study found that over 700 miles of Great Lakes shoreline would be vulnerable if Line 5 ruptured. In addition, the pipeline is a direct threat to the livelihood and treaty rights of several Native American tribes, including the Bad River Band of the Lake Superior Tribe of Chippewa Indians, and the five tribes that make up the Chippewa Ottawa Resource Authority.

Please call your representative to tell them you support this bill. Here is a brief script:

“Hello, my name is <name> and I live at <address>. I’m calling in support of HR 458, the Preserve Our Lakes and Keep Our Environment Safe Act. The Enbridge Line 5 pipeline is over fifty years old and a spill would be devastating to the Great Lakes and the surrounding communities.  I strongly support an investigation of the integrity of this pipeline, and believe it should be shut down if found to be unsafe. Please support HR 258. Thank you.”
