We had a great turnout at our first monthly climate vigil in Belfast.

Every Sunday the Waldo County Peace and Justice Committee holds a vigil on the corner of High & Main Streets from noon to 1pm. At this month’s meeting of the P&J it was decided to work with 350 Waldo County and dedicate the third vigil of the month to the theme of climate change.

We had a great turnout today with many motorists and pedestrians letting us know they were in solidarity with our message.

This week’s edition of Ira Glass’ “This American Life” is devoted to the topic of climate change. The three segments of the show feature a climatologist in Colorado who is seeing the effects of climate change in his own backyard, an interview with Republican climate champ Bob Inglis, and a segment with Bill McKibben on his campaign to make fossil fuel companies the villains.

Recent legislative activity @ the Statehouse has been, in a word, intense. Here’s another: disappointing. And another: unacceptable.

Though there were many bills in support of a sustainable future, the politics of outright dismissal of citizen’s wishes continues. The planet continues to literally be burning – and business as usual remains intent on fiddling the same tune of resource extraction, “jobs” and denial of reality.

What is the solution? YOU!

We are all extremely busy – at times, overwhelmed. But unless we stand up to the forces intent on destroying a sustainable and equitable way of life, all is literally lost.

We appreciate what you have done in the past but we need you again, now!

Many have suggested that there is nothing that we can do at this point. We at 350 Maine disagree – and call on you to take action as the citizens of Maine, committed to protecting our environment and natural resources.

On Wednesday, May 8th, L.D. 1059 “An Act To Protect Maine’s Environment and Natural Resources Jeopardized by Mining” is being considered in a Work Session by the Environment and Natural Resources (ENR) Committee in Augusta starting @ 1 pm.

WE NEED YOU!

In-person attendance at the Work Session is a unique and powerful statement. However, understandably, attendance at weekday legislative activities can be challenging. Nonetheless, any contact with decision makers and other resources has incredible value.

A specific request: please reinforce the support of L.D. 1059 by writing the ENR Committee prior to the Work Session. Please see additional information and suggestions here.
