Core values


Climate change transgresses boundaries, of both natural and human-defined separations, of communities, of nation-states, of lands, of waters, of near and distant neighbors, of rich and poor, of different cultures, of the past and the future. Many of its effects know no boundaries. Yet some bear the brunt and the consequences far more than others, and are far more vulnerable. 

 

Climate change reminds us that we are all in this together.

We see the call to to reduce levels from 400+ parts per million to 350 parts per million as a campaign and organizing touchpoint. It is with this common understanding that we get our mandate to work in this diverse region of the world as 350.org East Asia as a part of the global 350.org movement that will encourage citizens of East Asian countries to action.

We exist as a regional climate organization. Our missions is rooted in supporting and maintaining relations to national/local grassroots communities responding to the impacts of climate change.  Together, we work hand in hand to shift towards a sustainable future powered by community-based renewable energy.

Recognizing the potential and our responsibility to future generations, we  provide the youth venues and space to come up with practical and creative solutions to adapt and respond to the impacts of climate change. By empowering the youth, we help to mitigate the sources of global warming.

We also acknowledge that the Internet has altered the political landscapes, shattered the divide that once hindered people’s access to power; it has changed how we understand and define the word ‘community’ from traditional distinctions of geopolitics, class, race and gender to people in cyberspace self-organized into relationships of shared interests and values. That is why we also consider the many friends, followers and subscribers in our email list and social media accounts as part of 350.org East Asia; we strive to use our online accounts as means to facilitate conversations and develop relationships based on shared values so that together, we can co-create pathways and work towards our common goals guided by the belief that we can learn from one another.

Knowing the immensity of the problem we open ourselves to include everyone who wishes to join us in the work we do regardless of class, race and gender by providing space for them to contribute to our movement. We strive to network and form alliances with activists’ established social movements we are working in. We also acknowledge activists and movements in their diversity of priority, strategy and tactics  – as well as recognizing that movement building also involves reaching out to people who have not yet been involved in climate activism so that together we can expand and co-own the movement.

While we work in this region we take pride in our history as a movement that was founded by a group of university friends and Bill McKibben in the United States, which is why we seek to expound on what has been started by defining our identity and purpose in the global 350.org Movement.

We are well aware of our limitations by recognizing that while we work in collaboration to support grassroots communities we are not a funding organization and that the support we provide is done mainly to build partnerships with organizations that are stronger than ourselves. In this process, we can both learn from each other and add value to advance campaigns at areas of resistance to fossil-fuels and dirty energy development.

Lastly, we adhere to the principles of nonviolence  that will guide us in our campaign work to leverage people power to dismantle the influence and infrastructure of the fossil fuel industry, and to develop people-centric solutions to the climate crisis. As together we pursue a socially just and sustainable future where everyone has equal opportunity and access to live a life with dignity.
